You have just moved into the new home, the movers have left, and you want to open a quick can of soup so the children can have some lunch before you begin to arrange the furniture and unpack. But where is the can opener? Or the pot? Or the soup spoons?

A minor crisis like this can seem like a major catastrophe on moving day but it is easily avoided with a little forethought.

Plan to pack an “arrival kit” before the moving men arrive, and include all the small necessities that you may need as soon as you arrive. You'll have to use your judgment, but among the essentials you might think about are soap and towels, cooking pot, can opener, utensils, basic food items, a small first aid kit for those unexpected nicks and scratches, and other basics that will see you through those first hours.

Remember that you may have to do some cleaning before you stack items on shelves and in closets, so it's not a bad idea to have easy access to a vacuum cleaner, cleanser, rubber gloves, cleaning cloths and other items. Paper towels, toilet paper, shelf paper, and other paper needs will also prove to be important extras you will want to keep within easy reach.

Also, don't pack away the screwdriver, hammer, nails, pliers, flashlight, and light bulbs. You may find yourself without lights on the first night in your new home and unpacking Grandmother's heirlooms by candlelight is no easy prospects.

With careful planning, moving day can become less of a chore, and more of an intelligently executed, well-organized experience.
